Shreddin’ Hoedown

Come make sauerkraut or any other fermented vegetables with me and other fermenters. Let’s have a Shreddin’ Hoedown. This is a fun, informal, come-and-go event intended to bring the fermentation community in Bonnyville and surrounding areas together. Let’s share our enthusiasm, knowledge, and experience – basically, let’s have a great time while we ferment harvest vegetables! I’m free to help anyone who needs a refresher.

Do you have kids in school? Come by and make a jar before picking them up at 3:30pm. Do you work during the day? Grab a quick bite to eat, then come down and shred or pickle. Do you have kids but don’t have a babysitter? That’s okay, bring a quite game, colouring books – something to keep them contented while you shred. The goal is to preserve food that will keep your family healthy and add flavour to meals and snacks.

Please bring vegetables from your garden or farmer’s market if have your own or if you’d like to ferment anything other than cabbage. Consider bringing beets for beet kvass, carrots for fermented carrot juice, and fresh vegetables for brine-pickling. If you’d like to make sauerkraut with cabbage already purchased, indicate that in the registration form. This will help me determine how many pounds of cabbage to purchase for the group. I will try my best to source local, organic cabbage. I will have airlock jars available to buy, but feel free to bring your own fermenting vessels, whatever you have.

Ill bring:

  • nine shredding boards,
  • nine large metal bowls,
  • spices and salt,
  • knives, cutting boards
  • cabbage
  • recipes for sauerkraut and fermented pickling

You bring:

  • fermenting jars, any size
  • your favourite recipe, and a copy to share with others
  • any special ingredients for your recipes
  • apron
  • vegetables other than cabbage that you want to ferment
